Marcellus Shale Formation

What is the Marcellus Shale Formation

The Marcellus Shale Formation is found over 7 states and parts of Canada, with primary development in the United States found in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Characterized by its black shale, the Devonian Marcellus Formation (Marcellus Shale) covers approximately 54,000 square miles across the USA and estimates indicate it may contain at least 500 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. With development of oil an gas wells dating back to the 1800's, these sites have had a track record of environmental compliance and safety standards.

Once considered a minor play for oil and gas deposits, new research indicating the magnitude of recoverable natural gas and oil as well as the advancement of drilling techniques has made the Devonian Marcellus Shale Formation the single largest reserve of natural gas in the United States, producing $8.2 billion in annual output.

Recent advancements in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing have allowed for the economic development of oil and natural gas reserves abundant in the Marcellus Shale Formation. The application of hydraulic fracturing techniques has allowed for the increase of oil and gas recovered in the United States by as much as 30%. Advancements in hydraulic fracturing have been directly responsible for the addition of more than 7 billion barrels of oil and 600 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas.
